Dolphin Stampede

I’m lucky enough to have seen dolphins close up several times, chasing the boat we’re in like dear old friends.

But here is something really special – a full-on dolphin stampede.

Tea Making Tips (1941)

Here’s top tips on how to make the perfect cup of tea.

This film, from 1941, is the latest in the series of fims we have been highlighting from the treasure trove that is the British Film Institute (BFI) National Archive.

The tips are spot on; always use freshly boiled water, warm the pot, etc but just one thing that we think’s missing; don’t forget to stir the pot once just after you’ve poured the water in.

What’s also great about these archive films is listening in to the historic accents, whereby even your lowly charlady sounds posher than a present day Dame.

More from the BFI Archive:
Snow (1963)
Rush Hour (1970)
The Smallest Car in the Largest City in the World (1913)
Piccadilly (1929)
Trafalgar Square Riot (1913)
We Are the Lambeth Boys (1959)
Colour On The Thames (1935)

Halloween – 9 Films that scare the hell out of us

Introduction
With Halloween fast-approaching we’ve had a head-scratching morning figuring out a list of some of the most frightening films we’ve ever seen.

We’ve attempted to steer away from the more campy end of horror – we do love you Hammer, but you just don’t scare us – and go for an eclectic bunch of flicks, some clearly in the genre, some lolling around the edge like mutant monsters.

Take the Tim Burton produced film ’9′ which is released this week (see trailer above). It’s an odd one really but we wanted something new too and it fits our kooky remit perfectly. It’s like a furry Frankenstein, with scare factor for the family through and through.

From the past we feature Roman Polanski’s Repulsion with the totally freaked out young Catherine Deneuve wielding her blades. Then there’s Edward Woodward’s naive cop getting to see The Wicker Man one last time.

Enough already, you’ll no doubt disagree with our picks (listed in no particular order), so feel free to shout out your spooky selection and send us your comments (see below).

9 Films that scare the hell out of us
1. An American Werewolf in London
2. The Wicker Man
3. Nosferatu The Vampire
4. Repulsion
5. Carrie
6. The Exorcist
7. The Shining
8. Saw
9. 9 (couldn’t resist that placement)
